From Hesitation to Innovation : My AI Journey to Empower Student Learning
FULL
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity full
In this session, I’ll share how I moved from hesitation and uncertainty about AI to confidently using it in my classroom. Like many educators, I worried about dependency and its impact on real learning—until a pivotal webinar shifted my perspective. From there, I began experimenting, gradually turning AI into a meaningful learning partner rather than just a convenience tool. I’ll share real examples of how students use AI to brainstorm, revise, problem-solve, and reflect while still thinking independently. I’ll also highlight practical strategies, including AI-friendly assignments, clear expectations, and ways to address challenges like academic integrity. You’ll leave with ready-to-use ideas and prompts to help students use AI as a tool for growth, not just answers.

From Passive to Powerful: Making Notes Work for Students
LIMITED
Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity seats available
Most students have notes. Few know what to do with them. When teachers assign note-taking or have students copy notes in class, the assumption is often that the act of writing something down is enough; that students will review, internalize, and somehow arrive at deeper understanding on their own. But without structured guidance on what to do after the pen goes down, notes become a passive artifact rather than an active learning tool. In this hands-on professional development session, teachers will examine the AVID note-taking framework and rather than focus on teaching students merely how to format their notes, will investigate note-taking as  complete study cycle. You'll leave with practical, low-lift adjustments you can make immediately to transform note-taking from a compliance task into a genuine comprehension strategy. This session is for any subject and any level. No AVID experience needed.

Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity full
In this professional development session, we’ll explore how Google NotebookLM can support instruction by combining AI-powered research tools with creative content generation—all from your own classroom materials.

NotebookLM allows you to upload your documents (Google Docs, PDFs, etc.) and interact with them using AI to summarize, ask questions, build outlines, and now—generate podcasts directly from your materials. This feature transforms your content into audio explanations, making it easier to engage students through multiple modalities and support diverse learning needs.

You’ll learn how to create notebooks, leverage AI to enhance instructional planning, and use the podcast feature to make content more accessible and engaging for students. Whether you're supporting research, flipping your classroom, or offering review tools, NotebookLM opens up new possibilities.

Tuesday June 30, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity full
As Kern HSD bolsters literacy for all and continues to prepare graduates for the future, the rise of AI introduces new challenges and opportunities. How do we ensure students remain the authors of their own ideas while preparing them for a post-secondary world that expects AI literacy?

Join us for a session focused on bridging the gap between traditional academic integrity and the new era of AI. Whether or not your campus has access to Turnitin, this session is designed to meet you where you are.
We’ll move beyond AI detection to focus on the heart of the matter: critical thinking. We recognize that AI readiness varies—not just campus to campus, but classroom to classroom. This hour is dedicated to providing flexible strategies that support every instructor’s comfort level.

What we will cover:
  • AI in your classrooms: Navigating the "pains" of AI and acknowledging the spectrum of readiness—from stopping misuse to leveraging AI as a thought partner.
  • Future-ready students: Discussing how AI literacy directly impacts KHSD’s goal of graduation readiness for college and 21st-century careers.
  • A toolkit for everyone: Access free, ready-to-use resources focused on transparency and student reflection. These are available to all attendees, regardless of whether your campus currently has a Turnitin subscription.
  • KHSD spotlight: See how your peers are using our latest innovation, Turnitin Clarity to support their goals for AI literacy, and to build trust and transparency with students
Session Outcomes
  • Collaborate with peers on what AI literacy means for your specific subject area.
  • Learn how Turnitin’s latest pedagogical resources support instructors in guiding "AI-positive" conversations.
  • Access guides and lesson plans to foster critical thinking and academic integrity, tailored for both current customers and non-customers alike.

LIMITED
Wednesday July 1, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity seats available
An educator may undergo evaluation at least ten times during a 30-year career. If you've ever questioned the purpose or sought to increase the meaning of these evaluations, this session is for you. For the past two school years, a collaborative group of KHSTA members and KHSD administrators has been dedicated to redesigning our educator evaluation system to ensure the process is more meaningful. Attendees will gain insight into the revised California Standards for the Teaching Profession and how new evaluation instruments and documents will improve feedback and dialogue with evaluators.

Tiered Supports to Success
FILLING
Wednesday July 1, 2026 9:10am - 10:10am PDT
Limited Capacity filling up
Students often need additional support beyond Tier 1 universal practices. Even with strong Tier 1 structures in place, some students may require extra behavioral or social-emotional support. Tier 2 targeted interventions provide the next level of assistance for students who need more help, while Tier 3 offers individualized, intensive support for those with the greatest needs. This session provides a clear overview of Tier 2 and Tier 3 services within a PBIS–MTSS framework, focusing on how these supports are structured, implemented, and monitored to improve student outcomes
